25% of Tesla’s Management is Asian-American

December 8, 2020

Tesla recently released their 2020 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Impact Report for US operations last week and the numbers more-or-less align with Silicon Valley’s numbers.

While making up only 6% of the US population, Asian-Americans make up more than 20% of Tesla’s workforce, outnumbering other underrepresented communities, and 25% of director positions and higher management are Asian as well.

Tesla further reported 20% of new hires were also Asian-American while 23% of promotions were Asian as well, about 15% higher than 2019.

Tesla is no stranger to Asian tech. A majority of their most advanced parts were actually developed by Japanese companies. Their famous long-range batteries were created by Panasonic and their electrical system and chassis were developed by Fuji Technica. A majority of Space X scientists and engineers are Asian-American as well.

Asian companies dominate the automobile market and high-tech. Toyota is currently the 10th largest company in the world, right below Amazon, according to Fortune Global 500. Toyota surpassed its American rivals back in 2009 and hasn’t looked back.
