BALTIMORE, Maryland—67-year-old Hy-Shin Williams and her sister, 66-year-old Hye-kyong Yun were left bruised and bleeding after their faces were bashed in with a cement cinder block as they were getting ready to close up shop Sunday night, May 2.
Both women needed to be hospitalized and continue to suffer from headaches and dizziness. A plastic surgeon needed to stitch closed one of the gashes to Williams’ head as well, according to the Baltimore Sun.
49-year-old Darryl Doles was soon arrested for assaulting the two Korean women. This was after Doles allegedly attacked three other liquor stores owned by Asian-Americans.
When asked why he hurt the Korean women, Doles replied, “They need to go back to their country. I’ll order out before I eat that motherf**king food.”
After hearing Doles’ statement, a Baltimore grand jury indicted the 49-year-old Monday on 22 criminal charges including attempted murder, hate crimes, assault, and destruction of property, reports the Baltimore Sun.
Timeline of Assaults on May 2:
- 11:30 p.m.—Doles walks into Linden Discount Liquors on North Avenue to use the lottery machine. He was asked to leave because he wasn’t wearing a mask. According to the indictment, “Doles grew angry, threw the lottery machine on the ground, kicked it across the store, and walked out.”
- 11:45 p.m.—Doles returns to the store 10 minutes later, carrying a 2-by-4 piece of lumber. He bashes a security guard, hitting him in the ribs before the owner managed to pull the piece of lumber away from Doles.
- 11:50 p.m.—Doles walks into 40/40 Liquors on Pennsylvania Ave, kicked a display window, and knocked down multiple wine bottles before walking out. On his way out, he allegedly said, “F**k Chinese.”
- 12:00 a.m.—Doles then walks into Wonder Land Liquors, also on Pennsylvania Ave, and starts kicking in the display window and knocking things over before he was asked to leave. Hy-Shin tried locking the door and that’s when Doles showed up with a cinder block and began attacking.
