HONOLULU, Hawaii—Honolulu police are searching for a suspect who allegedly set an elder man on fire in Chinatown Tuesday morning, April 12.
The horrific act happened around 8 a.m. at the Chinese Cultural Plaza in Chinatown. The attack left the 79-year-old Asian man with serious burns to his back and neck, reports Hawaii News Now.
Surveillance footage from the plaza showed the elderly man walking alone with the suspect closely following him from behind. At one point, the suspect walks up to the back of the unsuspecting victim and uses a lighter to set the man’s shirt on fire.
The suspect is then seen running away as the victim continues walking.
It takes a few moments for the victim to realize what is going on. Shortly after, a bystander comes to help the victim put out the flames.
Authorities were called and they investigated the incident. They are still searching for a suspect. Law enforcement sources say he was wearing a t-shirt, jeans, and a blue beanie.
