NEW YORK CITY—The alleged incident happened on Saturday, June 11, near 13th Street and 9th Avenue around 6 p.m., one of the victim’s sisters posted the incident, pictures, and some video footage on Instagram.
“This all started cause we were standing behind a big rock where she was sitting at to figure out which direction to walk towards cause it was a 4-way intersection. She turned to us and said, ‘I know what you’re trying to do, you’re trying to harass me.’”
The victim’s sister continued to explain, “Mind you we weren’t talking to her and gave enough space between us and her to respect her boundaries and was only there for less than 30 seconds. The area itself was already crowded because there was a flower installation happening.”
That’s when things started escalating fast.
“We told her we weren’t trying to bother her and that she could ask nicely for us to move. We apologized and were trying to walk away when she continued to tell us to go back to our country and that we don’t belong here.”
The woman doesn’t look Native-American or Caucasian. Possibly mixed African-American or Afro-Latino. She looks to be in her late 40s or mid-50s, mixed race, about 5’3″.
“She kept calling us names in which we started to defend ourselves verbally. She pulled out her pepper spray and started spraying us. I was painfully blinded for 30 minutes. My friend’s faces were also burning. We tried to walk away from the situation but she continued to spray us.”
“She charged at my friend to spray her directly in the face. People stepped in to defend us and to her to stop but she wouldn’t. Instead, she sprayed them with a 1 liter Coca-Cola bottle. Afterward, she finally stopped and left. The police were called and are still on a look out for this woman.”
The NYPD’s 6th precinct has a report filed and is currently looking for the suspect.
